The extreme youth of so many of the men who sailed to Saint-Nazaire is illustrated by young Tom Milner, an apprentice carpet-weaver from Durham who, having just turned 21, found himself in charge of ML 298's forward Oerlikon.

Aside from their wooden construction and high octane fuel, the launches were further disadvantaged by the weakness of their 'main' armament, which were single 20mm Oerlikon cannons mounted forward and aft.

Assisted by Stoker Jim Mathers as loading-number, Tom kept his gun firing streams of red tracer as ML 298 manoeuvered to draw fire in the estuary narrows. Having been hit, then had his gun jam, Tom's thoughts of getting home again finally died when the 298 was fatally hit, set on fire and abandoned.
