L/Sig. 'Peter' Pike

Crucial to the success of CHARIOT was Ryder's ability to fool the German defences into believing that the strange ships entering the estuary were in fact friendly.

For this he employed both Signals Intelligence (Sigint) and the services of a signalman who could send and receive Morse code in German.

When the puzzled defenders of the port began to signal requests for identification, Leading Signalman Pike, acting alongside Ryder in the gunboat, signalled to both the Port Authority and the Fort de l'Eve Battery position using authentic German ship Morse-names to buy precious time while his claims were verified. By the time the ruse had been discovered it was already too late, and the leading elements of the force had almost reached their targets.
