WHAT NAVAL SERVICE NUMBERS MEAN....
To assist in ‘translating’ the arcane Naval Ratings’ numbering system - the letter before the forward slash denotes a base, C-Chatham, D-Devonport and P-Portsmouth. The letters after the forward slash mainly denote the rating’s ‘trade’ eg JX-seamen, signallers, etc, KX-stokers, L-Cooks and Stewards and M-other trades. A ‘CW’ (Commission and Warrant’) candidate was a rating selected as potential officer material. SS refers to ‘Short Service’, which can make it even more complicated. Surgeon Lt. 'Jock' Winthrope
Jock Winthrope was a Canadian Volunteer Reserve officer, on loan to the Royal Navy. Saskatchewan born and with a medical degree from the University of Toronto, he was the Campbeltown's only medical officer.
Upon receiving the order to 'abandon ship', Jock's first priority was to get the wounded off onto the waiting ML 177. Having succeeded in this, he continued to work on them, assisted by Campbeltown's Gunner (T), Mr. Hargreaves, as the launch cast off and made its way through the estuary to the open sea.
Hit amidships shortly thereafter, on fire and with no motive power, ML 177 was abandoned, with many men, including wounded, taking to the freezing water. It is believed Winthrope continued to assist the wounded in the water. Sadly, however, neither he nor Hargreaves survived.
