Cpt. Bill Pritchard MiD
Captain Bob Montgomery's collaborator in respect of having hatched the demolition plan upon which Operation Chariot was later based, was Welsh-born Sapper Captain Bill Pritchard - an Engineer with particular expertise in the field.
On the raid itself Pritchard, who would be in charge of all demolitions south of the Normandie Dock, travelled on board ML 457, which happened to be the only launch to land successfully at the Old Mole.
Effectively trapped in the area of the Old Town without any kind of support, Pritchard and the handful of men who had landed with him, did what they could to complete their assigned tasks in an area completely under enemy control. It was while exploring the narrow streets of the Old Town along with Corporal Maclagan, that Pritchard was tragically killed when he and Maclagan stumbled upon the enemy.
