Cpt. 'Bertie' Hodgson

Owing to an engine-failure outside the estuary, Captain Bertie Hodgson's Assault Party had to transfer from ML 341, to the 'spare' launch, ML 446.

Although the transfer was completed swiftly, it still left this crucial Assault team at the rear of the port column, rather than in the van where its much-needed fire-power might have swung the battle of the Mole in the raiders' favour.

As it was, ML 446 entered the battle at its height and suffered accordingly before damage and a growing casualty list obliged her to withdraw - along with the Commando force's primary medical party.

Scuttled at sea, the survivors of the ML were taken on board a British destroyer: sadly the 'charming and unflappable' Bertie, who had been killed early in the action, was not to be numbered amongst them.
