Maj. Bill Copland DSO

Aged 44 at the time of the raid, 'Major Bill', despite having been gassed at Passchendaele in the First War, was Colonel Newman's indispensible 'right arm' throughout the planning and execution of the raid.

In charge of all the Commando parties on board Campbeltown, he oversaw their speedy disembarkation all the time displaying an apparent disdain for the heavy fire already taking a toll of the men around him.

His own communications having also failed, he and his small team refused to leave the area of the dry dock before confirming that all essential demolitions had been completed. On rejoining his Colonel he helped organise and lead the last gallant charge across the lifting bridge before being finally taken prisoner along with the rest of the HQ party.
